Martin Luther King JR was a Civil Rights leader starting in the 1950’s, where his lessons soon became the path for all. He led thousands of protests and boycotts, organizations and campaigns that fought for African American rights, equality, and economic justice. The most famous ones being the Montgomery bus boycott, as well as the Birmingham Alabama protests and Washington Marches where he presented the “I have a Dream Speech” for the first time. MLK was also the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which organized and coordinated to desegregate bus systems across the South through nonviolent action, and later organized protests and marches.
Throughout his life, Martin Luther King Jr. has taught us to fight against hate with love and peace instead of violence. He gave a voice to the voiceless. He was the bow of a ship breaking the wave of oppression.
Through Martin Luther King Jr’s leadership, new movements have started such as the Black Lives Matter movement and his lessons are seen through their peaceful protests. He was imperative to the nation’s racial awareness, tolerance, acceptance and diversification. He has united a once separated nation and people of all races now “sit down together at the table of brotherhood.”
His well-known “I Have a Dream” speech was heard by millions of people around the world and through his words, they were able to find their voice. In the face of a segregated society, he fought bravely for what he believed in, like a true Hard Chaw.
“We must learn to live together as brothers or we will perish together as fools” -Martin Luther King Jr.
